Red Hill Urban Trail

The History: Red Hill Tavern was home to Martin Pheifer, Jr. Mr. Pheifer was a good friend of George Washington, having served with him at Valley Forge. For that reason, President Washington was a private guest of Pheifer during his Southern Tour, dining and spending the night with the family at Red Hill on May 29, 1791. Washington remarked in his journal that Pheifer was a good host and provided well for his guests. Red Hill was on the Old Wagon Road near the Irish Buffalo Creek in what is now western Concord. The tavern was destroyed by fire in the twentieth century. (Source)

The Urban Trail: Starting in Downtown Concord, the trail follows city sidewalks on Union Street N to Buffalo Avenue NW heading west to Spring St NW then east on Corban Ave SW and back to Union St S.

This 1.5-mile Urban Trail will take approximately 36 minutes to walk.


Village Urban Trail

The History: Gibson Manufacturing Company was established in 1899 when R.E. Gibson partnered with local industrialist James Cannon, Gibson Mill was Plant No. 6 for the Cannon Mills Company. Many of the employees of Gibson Mill lived in what’s now known as Gibson Village. (Source)

The Urban Trail: The Village Urban Trail connects Downtown Concord to part of the existing Village Greenway. The Village Greenway is 0.5 miles starting at the trailhead parking lot at Spring Street and Elm Avenue across from the Boys & Girls Club of Concord. The Greenway runs downhill along Elm Avenue’s sidewalk, turns onto Alexander Street, then down to Academy Avenue past the historic Academy Recreation Center and ClearWater Arts Center & Studios, and terminates at Kerr Street NW. The Village Urban Trail starts in Downtown Concord and heads north on Union Street to Academy Avenue. Use the Village Greenway to get to Kerr St NW and continue towards Cabarrus Avenue W heading Downtown.

This 1.75-mile trail will take approximately 42 minutes to walk.


Golden Nugget Urban Trail

The History: In 1799, Conrad Reed, the 12-year-old son of John Reed, found a gold nugget while playing along Little Meadow Creek that ran through his father’s farm. John Reed at first ignored the discovery, using the large 17-pound yellow rock or “Golden Nugget” as a doorstop in the Reed house. It was the first discovery of gold in America almost fifty years before the California Gold Rush. (Source)

The Urban Trail: Starting in Downtown Concord, take the trail east on Cabarrus Avenue E to McCachern Blvd SE then head west on Coban Ave E to Spring String NW. Finish the route east on Grove Avenue NW and south on Union St S back towards Downtown Concord.

This 1.25-mile loop around Downtown will take approximately 30 minutes to walk.


Downtown Greenway Loop

The Downtown Greenway Loop is an approximately 4-mile stroll or jog along paved greenway trails and sidewalks along the McEachern Greenway, Downtown Connector, and city sidewalks. Starting at McGee Park, the Loop follows the greenway to Les Myers Park; it then follows the sidewalk along Lawndale Avenue SE and a short off-street connector to Patton Court SE, then along Union Street S to Means Avenue; then along Means Avenue to the US Post Office, where the Downtown Connector leads back to McGee Park.

This 4-mile Urban Trail/Greenway Loop will take approximately 96 minutes to walk.
